CCC General Meeting

Description

The Career Counselor’s Consortium kickoff General Meeting for 2010-2011 provides timely information on economic and job forecasts offered by a local economy expert.  Following that keynote presentation, attendees will meet in topic subgroups to share resources and solutions to best serve clients in today’s climate.

In the Tuesday, September 28th edition of the Boston Globe, Steven Syre quotes economist Alan Clayton-Matthews, Ph.D. to get a reading on the state’s economic conditions.  The CCC is privileged to have Dr. Clayton-Matthews as our guest presenter at our Fall Kick-off General Meeting.

Dr. Clayton-Matthews serves in the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs at Northeastern University. His publications include a co-authored article, “Indexes of economic indicators: What can they tell us about the New England economy?” in the New England Economic Review.

Dr. Clayton-Matthews will offer insights into current economic trends, what employment sectors are expected to be hiring and how to keep abreast of employment trends in New England. His remarks will set the stage for break-out member discussions as we share strategizes on our clients’ job search issues and our own increased roles and responsibilities.

Our subgroup topics include:

  • How can we provide more for less for students in busy campus offices with limited staff and resources? What systems are counselors using to be more efficient?
  • How can we best serve alumni with unique employment issues who are requesting more services than usual from college career offices?
  • How can we serve clients in longer term coaching/counseling relationships due to extended unemployment?  How price extended services?
  • How do we promote adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to retool one’s skills with clients?
  • How does a counselor/coach kept abreast of job and training opportunities for clients, especially in the “hidden job market?”
  • What innovative strategies are coaches using to help clients research job market? How can we encourage clients to tap into local resources?
  • Post your own question and gather a discussion group

New Location for the General Meeting:  Please note that the location of this General Meeting has been moved to a larger suite to accomodate increased demand.  It will be located in the McLeod Suite, Room 318-322 located on the third floor of the Curry Student Center.

Special Bonus! The CCC is now offering a "Lunch and Learn" informal one-hour discussion after the Strategic Career Counseloring Tools meeting. The Lunch and Learn will begin at 12:15 pm and end at 1:15 pm. Anyone interested in staying for lunch to network with colleagues is welcome to bring their own lunch (or pick it up at the centrally located Northeastern University Food Court) and join us in Room 440, Curry Student Center (fourth floor). Note: There will be sufficient time for folks to pick up lunch and make their way to the new location for the Lunch and Learn start at 12:15 pm.

October 20th Lunch & Learn details:  We all have learned about what is happening in the economy, and have seen first-hand how it is affecting our clients.  And as career development professionals, we are working to assist our clients in the most effective ways, given this economy.  What more can we do?

Attend the kick-off Lunch & Learn and add one more tool to your repertoire.  We will hear from career development professionals who are currently using the tool of advocacy in their work assisting clients.

What is advocacy?  What does it look like when working with clients?  When working for clients?  How can this work help to lighten the load for clients and career development professionals alike?

When we move from victim to advocate, it is amazing what energy we can muster and what results are possible, no matter what the economic climate.
