General Meeting - Counseling Techniques: Simple & Free Self-Assessment Tools

Date: Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Location: McLeod Suites, 3rd floor (Curry Student Center) Northeastern University | Boston, MA

Time: 8:30am - 12:00pm

Ever heard these before?

“I’m stuck, this work no longer feeds me, I’m not sure what to do.”

“Help, I can’t choose my major.”

“I’m exploring two different career options, but I’m afraid of making the wrong choice.”

When our clients are struggling with what to do with their lives, we often turn to one of the well-known self-assessment tools including the MBTI, StrengthsFinder, and SkillScan to help them decide what they really want. However, there are lots of other simple, yet effective, techniques, tools, and tips that we can use, many of which are free.

We’ll spend the first hour of this hands-on workshop going through a couple of alternative “paper and pencil” self-assessment exercises. You’ll act as the client, actually completing the exercises for yourself, and then you’ll get to discuss the results with your peers. Many of these tools and exercises will fall under one of these categories: Values, Interests, Personality and Skills (often called VIPS in career development jargon).

After a networking break, we will reconvene at small tables to try out and discuss some additional tools. We will spend 20 minutes on each table, rotating 3 times, so this is sure to be a fun, engaging, and collaborative session!

You’ll leave with new counseling ideas and more tools in your toolkit for helping your clients with their important career decisions. You will also get electronic copies of all the handouts and exercises. And we invite you to bring any of your own self-assessment tools with you to share, informally, with your colleagues.
