Professional Development Seminar: "Helping Clients Take Charge of their Employment"

Date: Friday, February 8, 2019

Time: 9:00am - 12:30pm

Location: Northeastern University, Curry Student Center, Room #340

As a career counseling professional, you spend your time and energy helping others navigate jobs and the changing landscape of work. Yet the landscape is changing so quickly, new tools and skills are needed to stay current in this fast-changing world. This workshop will teach you the new skills needed today to help your clients and students take charge of their careers.

Do you want to teach your clients how to deploy more of their professional passion in their current organization? Are they feeling stuck in their life or job? How can they take advantage of today’s uncertainty and ambiguity to jumpstart their own career development?

Through this half day workshop, learn how to help clients boost their own career self-direction and better navigate their careers from their current jobs. As career ladders fade and organizations move at breakneck speed, it is more important than ever for everyone to learn how to manage their own career development, so they become and remain employable and retainable. Today, it’s up to the individual to direct their own career trajectories. This workshop will show how to do just that through a series of practical exercises.

Learn new tools and skills for helping clients to:

  • Unlock the secret of how to create meaningful, win-win work situations, so they can grow their careers from their current job.

  • Learn to “Scan the Horizon” to discover career opportunities right in front of them.

  • Help them discover their “Nextivity,” a professional development opportunity that benefits them and the organization.

  • Learn to “Recruit Your Boss” and other champions to be an ally in their career development journey – they just may reveal to them, their own potential.

  • Leave with one concrete practice, something they can do often, to take charge of their career and create work that they love.

Takeaways:

  • A refreshed sense of purpose and mission in their work

  • One draft “Nextivity”

  • A draft “discussion guide” for recruiting their boss and other champions as allies in their career development

  • An action plan for moving their vision forward
