Counsulting from a Generational Perspective

Join us on Wednesday, October 24 at 450 Dodge Hall, Northeastern University for the kickoff CCC meeting of the year!

Counseling from a Generational Perspective - examines the workplace of today, and why it is important to understand its diverse attributes and motivational factors. There are four unique generations in the workplace today, each influenced by their upbringing, technological expertise, and how they view and navigate the workplace. We will examine each generation, and how their ambitions, skills, interest and values affect the different strategies we employ as career counselors. Counselors are more effective when they understand the work styles and motivating factors of each generation. Those attributes will be highlighted and better understood, resulting in greater insight and opportunities for improved counseling team effectiveness.

Presenter: Bob Dolan, Career Scapes

Sharing Best Practices in the Career Counseling Field

Join us for an exciting, collaborative event to share our best practices from our college career centers and private practices. There is a wealth of knowledge, expertise and creativity in our community and this event is designed to tap it, and share it!

Ideas will be shared in informal small group talks on a wide range of topics. Highlights from these talks will then be shared with the larger group.

April 23, 2008: When Career Counselors Get the Itch: Career Growth For Career Pros

As career pros, we're in the business of cultivating and listening to dreams and helping others tease out their meaning and acting on what is real. We’ve listened to wannabe tycoons and nurses, artists and astronauts and helped launch filmmakers, scientists, and teachers. As years go by hearing all those stories, we wonder if our own career, or the way we occupy it, is large or faceted enough. Then one afternoon, you open the door to the questions: What if I wanted something else or more? A new job, a new component, a new perspective?

Suddenly, you’re sitting in your client’s seat and as ideas start to spin, you want to open yourself to the options. What do I want to do? you ask with more fervency.

Do you come to this program to see career pro panelists who have peered at these questions? Pros who have flirted with the devil of change? Will you stomach the moderator, Kendall Dudley, long enough to get to the heart of the morning filled with insight and passion?

If you've wondered how career counselors can morph partially or entirely into coaches, HR professionals, eggheads and trainers, come hear / see / schmooze with the following:

    • Rita B. Allen, Founder and President of Rita B. Allen Associates, a provider of career management services for individuals and organizations.
    • Sue Galvin, Life Coach
    • Kit Hayes, LifeWork Transformation Consultant, formerly in higher education and outplacement at Keystone Associates
    • Anna Shenk, Career Counselor at The Work Place (A One-Stop Career Center)

If you know enough to steer clear of this event, tell your unsuspecting colleagues to come and then head for cover!

    Presenter: Kendall Dudley

Who is this moderator, Dudley? He wears several hats as General Factotum at Lifeworks Career & Life Design of Watertown and runs career, writing, art and pre-retirement programs at Lesley, Harvard and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. He has been let loose at NCDA and ICDC annual conferences and has written online career stuff plus "Picturing Work: Career Design Using Writing and Art."
